Gareth Hickman MCIAT –
I started my career as a trainee Architectural Technician with Wrekin Construction Co Ltd, who themselves operated Civil Engineering, Housing and Design & Build departments. Employed by the Design and Build department I worked on varying projects nationwide, both from the drawing board but also on site – placed in various roles including site engineering, site management and design coordination positions. This gave me a very early insight into the site-side of construction, allowing for a faster understanding of the design process, and the support which was expected of the design team. Wrekin Construction were well known for their commitment to training and during my time there I attended Shrewsbury College to achieve ONC/ HNC in Building Construction. I also attended Telford College to achieve qualifications in AutoCAD. Following this I attended Demontfort University in Leicester, where I achieved a Diploma in Construction Technology and Management. I became a full member of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists in September 2012.
Since choosing to become self employed in 1999, I have worked for many clients, on a very diverse range of projects, from cemetery design, through to new build offices and warehousing – including various private extensions and new-builds along the way. Most recent projects of interest are “high end” extensions and re-modelling of existing homes, as well as some interesting one-off new build designs.
During the last 13 years I have also sub-contracted our services to various architects, surveyors and land-agents and intend to continue this successful relationship with such clients. Looking forward, I am very excited about the continued technical developments which we are able to employ and develop in order to build on our design power, efficiency, and keeping us on top of developments within the profession.
Running the practice is a full time commitment, but during the very infrequent ‘spare time’ I get, I enjoy Sea Kayaking/ Fishing, squash, and generally getting out and about exploring the country.
Alex joined us in September 2010 following a successful work experience placement from William Brookes School, where he impressed with the speed with which he mastered the use of CAD.
Although Alex is relatively new to the field of architecture, he brings a good range of skills to the practice and is an essential part of the team.
Alex currently provides the CAD & 3D support to the office, working primarily on surveys, concepts, 3D visuals and administrative support for our projects.
Alex also enjoys a passion for cars. Alex is our techno-savvy gadget man and can make anything work, be it a software problem, design challenge or a web coding issue.
Alex enjoys spending time with his family; in particular “playing silly” with his young son, Callum.
